Developed to help people disconnect from their daily lives and with a vision of sustainability, the Canon de la Vieja Lodge is a destination for relaxation and adventure. The nearby Rincon de la Vieja National Park, named after the 1,895m volcano within, has established trails that wind their way to the summit crater. This volcano, which commonly spews steam, is the largest of five that comprise the Cordillera de Guanacaste. Within this park lies the headwaters of innumerable rivers and ravines where crystalline waters plunge some 200 ft into blue lagoons.
From horseback riding on scenic trails to soaking in the hot springs, this region provides a way to connect with the natural environment for all travelers. Additionally, several river rafting outfits lead day-long trips in the class II and III rapids on the nearby Colorado River. For those wishing to explore some history, Santa Maria’s historic house, from the XIX century, has been converted to a museum where visitors can view photography, hand tools, old farm equipment, and an impressive insect collection.
